Fishing plays a significant role in the lifestyle of Rakiura Stewart Island. The nutrient-dense cold waters surrounding the island are teeming with marine life, making it one of New Zealand’s most productive fishing regions. Prepare to encounter a variety of paua, scallops, crayfish, and blue cod. Make sure you’re ready for an unforgettable day on the water and dress appropriately for all weather conditions. Top spots
Oban Village
A charming small fishing village located in Halfmoon Bay, Oban stretches over a peninsula to Paterson Inlet and provides the perfect base for birdwatchers, hikers and hunters exploring Rakiura Stewart Island. Visitors can spot kaka, tui, and kereru during the day, and kiwi at night. With a hangar at Fern Gully in Oban, many of our scenic flights allow passengers time to explore this quaint little town known for its golden beaches and welcoming locals. Don’t miss the local museum, a game of life-size chess, and the treasures hidden in the rock pools.

Ulva Island
Ulva Island is one of the rare, pest-free open sanctuaries in New Zealand. In this pristine rainforest, you can observe rare birds and plants up close in a secure environment, largely unaffected by human activity and free from introduced species. Healthy populations of kiwi, saddleback, and yellowhead thrive here—birds that often face challenges on the mainland.

Observation Rock
This scenic location is perfect for experiencing spectacular sunsets, sunrises, and the enchanting beauty of the night sky. A short 30 min return walk from Oban along a maintained track is worth the reward for fantastic panoramic views over Paterson Inlet.

Masons Bay
Spanning 14 kilometers, Masons Bay beckons to adventurers with its captivating blend of rich history and vibrant wildlife. Once home to the ancient Māori, the bay echoes their stories as you explore its scenic landscapes. In the early 1900s, pioneering farmers settled here, and remnants of their homesteads stand as a testament to their struggles. The bay is also renowned for hosting the largest kiwi population in the world, providing a rare opportunity to see these nocturnal birds in their natural habitat.

The Snuggery
Aotearoa’s southernmost café, renowned for brewing the southernmost coffee in the country. The Snuggery, housed in a charming old museum building, has been transformed into a cozy spot for breakfast or lunch. It boasts a retro bach vibe featuring a 1970s-era TV, formica tables, and a warm palette of browns and beiges. The menu offers beloved local classics like Cheese Rolls, alongside a fantastic array of cabinet selections, including vegetarian and vegan options.

Fin and Feather Eatery
A food truck takeaway experience dedicated to delivering gourmet meals of restaurant quality, with locally sourced ingredients and environmentally-friendly packaging. The menu changes monthly, reflecting the seasonal produce available on the island, including vegetarian and vegan options.

Rakiura Distilling Company
New Zealand’s southernmost distillery produces boutique spirits that celebrate “the purest rainfall on the planet combined with locally foraged manuka, rimu and horopito” for a real taste of Rakiura Stewart Island. The distillery is not open for tours or tastings, but the Third Island Gin and Vodka are available nearby at the South Sea Hotel in the centre of Oban.

Kai Kart
Kai Kart is a well-loved food truck on Stewart Island known for its fresh seafood dishes. Nestled in the center of Oban, it serves as a favourite destination for both locals and tourists eager to enjoy the island’s famous fish and chips. South Sea Hotel Restaurant
South Sea pride themselves on serving up the freshest, locally sourced seafood, with something for everyone. Whether you’re gluten-free, vegetarian, or vegan, the menu will tantalize every taste bud. The restaurant and pub occupy the entire first floor of the main hotel building. Reservations essential during peak summer season.
