Stewart Island Hunting Blocks

A 6-bed hunters hut located on the southern side of Paterson Inlet. Bookings are essential, and must be booked and paid for through the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre. Landing is at Patterson Inlet.

Big Hellfire Hut is a standard 12-bunk hut located along the North West Circuit, 14km from East Ruggedy Hut or 15kms from Masons Bay Hut. Bookings not required, first come first served. Find out more here.

This is a 6-bunk hunters hut, also known as Port Adventure Hunters Hut or Heron River Hut. Bosom is a coastal hunting block which requires a restricted area permit to hunt, and at times may have hunting restrictions. This hunting area is covered by a ‘restricted area permit’. Bookings are essential, and must be booked and paid for through the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre.

Bugaree Hut is located on the North West Circuit. This is a standard 16-bunk hut with mattresses, water supply and toilets. We recommend boiling water before use. Bookings are not required, first come first served. The next closest huts are Port Williams or Christmas Village

This is a basic 4-bunk hunter hut on the Southern Circuit Track, intended for hunters who have booked the surrounding hunting blocks. This hut must be booked and paid for through the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre.

This is a 6-bed hut located on the East Cape of Stewart Island. This hunting block is operated by Rakiura Māori Lands Trust, with the hunting block rotating on a Saturday.

East Ruggedy Hut is a standard 12-bunk hut on the North West Circuit, 9.5km from Long Harry Hut and 14km from Big Hellfire Hut. Bookings not required, first come first served. Find out more here.

This is a standard 10-bunk hut located on the South Circuit Track on the west side of South West Arm. Bookings not required, first come first served. Before you go, buy 1 x Standard Hut Ticket (blue for adults, yellow for youth) for each night’s stay and put this in the honesty box at the hut. Alternatively, you can buy a Backcountry Hut Pass that gives unlimited use to most Standard and Serviced huts for a 12-month period.

Freshwater Hut is a standard 16-bunk hut located on the North West Circuit between Masons Bay and Freds Camp. Bookings not required, but standard hut tickets or backcountry hut passes must be purchased.

This is a basic 6-bed hunters hut located in Port Adventure, this is a basic six bed hunters hut. Bookings are essential, and must be booked and paid for through the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre. Please note, while the beach is idyllic in good weather, it can get extremely rough. It is sometimes necessary to stand waist deep in the water to hold the dinghy steady on arrival or departure.

Little Hellfire is a basic 6-bunk hunters hut on the North West Circuit, two minutes walk from the beach. Bookings are essential and can be booked through the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre.

Long Harry Hut is a standard 12-bunk hut on the North West Circuit, 8.5km from Yankee River Hut and 9.5km from East Ruggedy Hut. Bookings not required, first come first served. Find out more here.

Lucky is a coastal block in Rakiura National Park. This is a restricted hunting block which can be booked online. There is a campsite with space for two tents, please note there are no huts in this block. Campsite bookings are not required, but hunters will need to book the hunting area.

Māori Beach is a coastal block located in Port William on the Rakiura Track. This campsite has space for four tents – please note, there is no hut here. Bookings are essential. No hunting is allowed within 100 metres of the Rakiura Track at any time of the year. Closed 1 November – 31 March for the Great Walks peak season.

This is a basic 4-bunk hunter hut located in the southern end of Masons Bay, intended for hunters who have booked the surrounding hunting blocks. This hut must be booked and paid for through the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre.

A basic 4-bunk hunters hut providing shelter and basic amenities. Please note, we do not land at the Masons DOC hut, only Homestead Hunters hut. This is approximately a 20 min walk from the Masons DOC hut.

Mid Big Glory is a coastal block in Big Glory Bay, Paterson Inlet, Rakiura National Park. This restricted hunting block requires a restricted area permit, which can be booked online. There are no huts in this block, responsible camping allowed where appropriate.

This is a basic 6-bunk hut along the North West Circuit. Bookings required, you can book via the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre.

This is a 24-bunk Great Walk hut located on the Rakiura Track. There is also a campsite next to the hut with space for 4 non-powered tents. Bookings are essential and can be made here. Backcountry hut tickets or passes cannot be used at this hut.

This is a standard 6-bunk hut located on the east coast of Rakiura in Cooey Bay, on the northern side of the Lords River Bay. The rotation day for this block is Friday. The coastal location of this block offers excellent fishing and diving opportunities, however please note there are daily catch limits. Bookings must be made via the Rakiura Māori Lands Trust.

This is a basic 6-bunk hunters hot located at the start of the peninsula jutting out into the bay at the south eastern end of the block. Bookings are essential, and must be booked and paid for through the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre.

This is a basic 6-bunk hunters hut located at the end of Big Kuri Bay. This hut is part of the Big Kuri hunting block operated by Rakiura Māori Lands Trust. This block is offered on a weekly rotation, and can be booked on a per week basis with a rotation day specific to the block you have chosen.

Rakeahua hut is a standard 6-bunk hut situated along the South Circuit Track. Bookings not required, first in first served. Alternatively, you can buy a Backcountry Hut Pass that gives unlimited use to most Standard and Serviced huts for a 12-month period.

Rollers is a coastal block in Rakiura National Park. There are no huts in this block, but you may camp responsibly where appropriate. A restricted hunting permit is required to hunt at Rollers. You can book this here.

Ruapuke Island is located 15 kilometres southeast of Bluff and 32 kilometres northeast of Oban on Stewart Island. This is a private island, so permission will need to be obtained from a land owner.

Located on the North West Circuit, this is a basic, 6-bed hunters hut. This hut must be booked and paid for through the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre.

A campsite located on the eastern side of Big Glory Bay. Bookings are required for the hunting block, but the campsite works on a first in first served basis.

This is a private 6-bed hut located on the east coast of Stewart Island, on the southern side of the entrance to Lords River Bay. The rotation day for this block is Friday. The coastal location of this block offers excellent fishing and diving opportunities, however please note there are daily catch limits. Bookings must be made via the Rakiura Māori Lands Trust.

 This is a standard 8-bunk hunters hut situated on the south side of Islet Cove. This hut must be booked and paid for through the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre.

This is a private 6-bunk hut located on the east of Stewart Island South Tikotathi, operated by Rakiura Māori Lands Trust. The rotation day for this block is Sunday. Bookings must be made via the Rakiura Māori Lands Trust.

South Toi Toi is a hunting block with a campsite operated by the Rakiura Māori Lands Trust. This block rotates on a Saturday and is located on the southern side of Toi Toi Bay with the block running up the river. The coastal location of this block offers excellent fishing and diving opportunities, however please note there are daily catch limits.

This is a basic 6-bunk hunters hut, located on the eastern side of South West Arm. Bookings are essential, and must be booked and paid for through the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre.

Waituna is a coastal block in Rakiura National Park. This restricted hunting block is bookable online. There are no huts in this block. The bush camp is a small area of flat land that can be found in the bush on the main track to Waituna. Please note, it is a fair haul with a lot of gear.

This backcountry campsite is located next to West Ruggedy Beach and is part of the West Ruggedy hunting block. This must be booked online prior to departure.

This is a standard 16-bunk hut. Bookings not required, first come first served. The hut is on the North West Circuit located between Smoky Hunters Hut and Lucky campsite.
